The Creativ Brief: How Technology Affects Language

Traditional English grammar is degrading in favor of readability.

Where the Oxford elites would call for a comma - there is now a dash.

Instead of formal capitalization, one can capitalize ANYTHING for emphasis.

In lieu of a word, one can put a simple 😊.

Technology has forced modern writing to evolve from the long prose of our parents to shorter, snappier clauses found on social media.

LinkedIn posts have become curt status updates that have replaced company blogs. Instagram posts, peppered with emojis, provide snippets of curated daily life. Twitter pioneered the newsy thought in 125 characters or less.

New AI machine models are further influencing how we type with technology. AI prompt engineers, professionals that design prompts and copy for AI ingestion, are one of the fastest growing professional fields.

The point remains - keep your audience interested, engaged, and reading.

3 Stories Dominating Media and Tech Headlines

The Golden Globe's 81st Annual Ceremony Produced a Variety of New Winners

Here is a list of the most notable wins.

  1. Lily Gladstone - Killers of the Flower Moon: Best Female Actor in a film - drama.

  2. Cillian Murphy - Oppenheimer: Best Male Actor in a film - drama

  3. The Bear - Best TV Series - musical or comedy

  4. Oppenheimer - Best Film - drama

  5. Sarah Snook - Succession: Best Female actor in a TV series - drama

Why it matters: The reviews were mixed with a universally panned host while many diverse actors winning their first Golden Globe. The juries still out whether award shows can still draw big audiences in the streaming era.

The NFL is Dominating What is Left of Live TV Viewership.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football season was its most-watched ever, Amazon’s exclusive Thursday Night Football broadcasts were up 24% year-over-year in 2023, and the NFL’s Thanksgiving games set an all-time viewership record last year.

Why it matters: As on-demand content moves to streaming, live TV events - mainly sports - are the only thing left that can coral millions of Americans together at the same time. Expect a more competitive ad market for live broadcast sporting events between major broadcast networks and streaming.

SAG AFTRA Announced a Deal on Tuesday that  Sets Terms for  The Use of AI Voices in Video Games The deal with Replica Studios, an AI voice technology company, establishes protections around the licensing of digitally replicated voices.

The deal sets minimum terms and conditions on AI use, requires the company to obtain consent before it uses replicated voices, and enable performers to decline the use of their voices in future projects.

Why it matters: With the writers and actors guilds settling with the studio, gaming has become another frontier of creative and AI tension. Actors, writers, and creatives will have to weigh licensing their craft with AI’s ability to license the product.
